Dan Voorhis
Dan Voorhis (on right), Director of the Small Business Development Center at Western Illinois University in Macomb, was this weeks guest speaker.

He talked about the center and how it helps people wanting to start a business, how it assists them in developing a business plan and works with them through the whole process.

Click here for details about the center and its services.

Dan says "there is money out there to fund new businesses. We help you find it." He also encouraged anyone who knows someone selling items on E-Bay, to have them talk to him because, according to Dan, "E-Bay has turned over all information on its sellers to the IRS and taxes will be due on items they have sold."

Meeting Notes

President-elect Pat Stout filled in for vacationing President Debbie Vandemark and opened the first meeting of the new year. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Kiwanis Pledge, John Moon led us in singing "Boost Kiwanis" and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

Pat reminded members we are trying to form an Interclub to go to Quincy on January 18. Kiwanis International President Paul Palazzolo will be visiting the Quincy Noon Kiwanis Club that day. They are planning for a large crowd, so we need to let them know before Jan 11th who from our club will be attending. Click here to see the invitation. We are asking members who would like to go, to respond to an email message that is being sent out along with the notice that this Builder has been updated. Be sure to watch for that. Pat says we'll finalize all the details at next weeks meeting.

Happy BucksHappy Buck$

Happy Buck$ this week from:

Owen Thompson - one in honor of the Bronze Medal won by Macomb High School and another for the Salvation Army kettle campaign. Over $52,000 was raised in this years campaign, beating last years total by $300.

Pat Stout - went on a Christmas vacation to North Dakota where they encountered a blizzard (surprise!) but had a good time.

Jay Carter - happy to tell the story of Thomas Gilmore who was a Kiwanis member going back to the origins of our club in 1922. One time, Thomas, at the age of 95, was on a train and his tickets blew out the window. The story goes that the train stopped, he got off, walked the track and found the tickets. Then he took a taxi from Macomb and met the train again in Monmouth. Thomas turned 100 in 1930 and, at at the time, was the oldest living Kiwanis member in the world! There was a birthday party for him and 200 people from Macomb attended. He blew all 100 candles out. Each person at the party was given an autographed photo of Thomas. His speech was brief. He said "grow old along with me, the best is yet to be."

Waneen Stout won the 50/50 Drawing and donated her share to the Salvation Army!
