Guest speaker Suzan Nash oversees the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC) which assists local governments and residents in a multi-county area. She told us that the WIRC provides staff to assist local governments in grant writing and other community planning efforts. They also help low income residents and victims of domestic violence with a food pantry and free clothing store and said they started a victim services program and hotline several years ago.
"The WIRC is a multi-facted organization that focuses on human services and improving the lives of Western Illinois residents" Suzan said.
She told us about some of their new programs including economic development efforts for area communities. After Hancock County and Henderson County were declared disaster areas after last years flooding devastated parts of each county, the WIRC is working to assist flood victims with their immediate needs and helping to coordinate federal disaster relief.
The WIRC is also helping 16 counties that are looking at ways to improve transportation services for their residents.
Next week: January program chairman Ken Harp will introduce guest speaker Lisa Gruber who will explain a Nature Quilt Project that helps children.
President Tim Moss presided, John Moon led us in singing "Take Me Down To Kiwanis " and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.
Jack Elfrink was the winner of the 50/50 Drawing and donated his share to the Salvation Army.
Tim passed around sign-up sheets for the Division Mid-Winter Meeting January 31 in Monmouth and the Spastic Paralysis Bowl-A-Thon in February. He said "we're in the process of putting together an Interclub to the Mid-Winter meeting with three members already signed up. We need a fourth to make it an official Interclub."
Tim also says "we still need Program Chairpersons for the months of May and July." Contact Susan Thompson if you are interested.
There's been some confusion as to how The Illeiowan publication is being distributed. As was announced earlier, The I-I District is no longer mailing out copies of The Illeiowan. Instead, it is being published online. Click here to see the
latest edition. The district plans to send out e-mail notices to members that the latest version is available. They will not be e-mailing the actual magazine. You can always find a link on our Macomb Kiwanis Club Links page.
Owen Thompson - Happy to see Wayne Mounts at the meeting after he had an accident and another for discovering a banner depicting the raising of the
american flag on the island of Iwo Jima during World War Two. Owen then gave the banner to John Moon who was there during that famous battle.
Guest speaker Suzan Nash - Happy to be here.
