She has replaced Jeff Applegate who was promoted to the Galesburg/Kewanee area.
She said that, in our area, 237 youths participated in Cub Scouts last year. This year that number was down to 206. There were 70 Boy Scouts last year and this year they are up to 85.
Esther talked about the new scouting program started by MOSAIC with the help of new Kiwanis member Heidi Collins. Both she and Heidi are excited about this new effort to bring new people into scouting and help them with their self-confidence and leadership skills.
This is the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts. Our club has supported local scouting and looks forward to lending a hand during the scouts summer camp again this year.
February program chairman Ted Pawlias announced we'll have the following speakers in the coming weeks:
February 16 - Clay Hinderliter
February 23 - Steve Hopper from McDonough District Hospital
President Debbie Vandemark presided, John Moon led us in singing "How D'ye Do" and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.
Thanks to Jay Carter for arranging for our annual Pancake Day Thursday, April 22, at the American Legion. Tim is working on letters to be mailed out to previous sponsors and we'll need to devote one meeting to getting organized with ticket sales and preparations for our biggest fundraiser of the year.
Debbie says we still need a replacement program chairman for the month of March and another one for April. She passed out a sign up sheet looking for volunteers to arrange programs for the next two months.
Another sign up sheet was passed around for the Picture Book of the Month program. We're looking for members to read to different classes.
Debbie gave a report on last weeks board meeting. Tim Moss represented our club at the City Council meeting and the council approved our plan to sell bricks to
help fund the new playground. We also voted to give $400 to the Macomb After Prom project and approved membership for Heidi Collins. Sorry to say we lost a few members due to resignations. Resigning from the club were Harold Thompson, Don Mathis, Gary Sash and Donna Pawlias. Joe Eichaker is no longer a member of our club since he moved to St. Louis to be closer to his ailing father. We're trying to work it out so we can transfer his Kiwanis membership to a club where he now lives.
Our club has been approved as new members of the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce. Debbie will be our representative on their Ambassador Committee which welcomes new businesses at their grand openings. Several members met last week with Walter Burnett of Macomb Public Works and John Ponder with Lacky Monuments to finalize the brick design and brick sales project for the new playground. We'll distribute 550 fliers in the March Chamber of Commerce newsletter and will also have brochures printed to pass out at various locations. It was also announced that the Stites Building on Washington Street has been sold, so we moved equipment we had stored there into a temporary storage facility compliments of Joe Vandemark.
