Captain Owen Thompson (on right) filled in for scheduled speaker/entertainer Bryce Dexter because "Elvis has left the building" and was unable to be at the meeting.
Instead, Owen gave a program on the history of Valentine's Day for our special Valentine's dinner meeting at the Ponderosa restaurant.
He said a lot is not known about St. Valentine but the day has evolved into a celebration that includes sending regular greeting cards and now e-cards through the internet. Owen said the oldest known card is from 1415 and was from a Duke in prison to his wife. That card is now in the London Museum. He also showed pictures of Valentine's cards through the years and said "one billion cards are sent each year" according to the Greeting Card Industry, second only to Christmas.
The character of Cupid is also associated with Valentine's Day and can be a prankster or a more romantic figure.
Owen recalled some of the best known "love" movies through the years including "Casablanca", "Gone With The Wind", "Roman Holiday", "From Here To Eternity", "An Affair To Remember" and "Somewhere In Time."
Owen also read the poem "How Do I Love Thee" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning which begins with the classic line "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Another one he noted was "A Red, Red Rose" by Robert Burns.

President Tim Moss presided and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.
The Spastic Paralysis Bowl-A-Thon has been moved to Saturday, March 14, in Abingdon. Jay Carter, Ken Harp, John Moon, Tim Moss, Wayne Mounts, Gary Sash, Owen Thompson and Debbie Vandemark will all represent our club. Debbie suggested passing around a hat to collect donations. We did that this week and will do it again next week. Debbie says the group will leave early so they can have lunch at a nearby restaurant before bowling. The bowlers plan to car pool it leaving from the Days Inn parking lot at 10:30 that morning.
Tim announced he has been thinking about setting up a booth to sell our Kiwanis benches at the Summer Meeting to help raise funds for the club.
We received a check for the Feed The Children program, the weekend food program, from the Altrusa Club. The goal is $12,000. See the list of contributors here. If you know of another group that might be interested in participating be sure to let Tim know.

Have you ever gotten stuck when trying to answer the question "what is Kiwanis?" Here's a quick 30 second response direct from Kiwanis International.
"Kiwanis International is an international organization of member-volunteers who give more than 6 million hours and more than $100 million each year to help change the world one child and one community at a time. Any community need can become a Kiwanis service project, especially if the need involves children, who should have the help and the right to lead healthy, successful lives. We believe that helping a child helps the world."
