Susan DiGrino (on right), Director of Environmental Health with the McDonough County Health Department, spoke about safe food handling, something we need to keep in mind as we get ready for our annual Pancake Day April 23.
She covered some of the basics including washing hands and surfaces often, separate food items - don't cross contaminate, cook foods to their proper temperatures and refrigerate promptly.
Susan said we have two benefits already. The American Legion has a licensed kitchen and our own Debbie Vandemark is a certified food handler.
A website with more information about safe food handling is www.foodsafety.gov.
President Tim Moss presided, John Moon led us in singing "Hail To Kiwanis" and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.
Tim, Lt. Gov. Pat Stout and his wife Waneen all attended the Mid-Winter Conference last weekend in Decatur which also counts as an Interclub. Tim also brought along a yellow Kiwanis International tee-shirt from the conference. He said "that shirt will go to the person who brings in the next member."
The Spastic Paralysis Bowl-A-Thon has been moved to Saturday, March 14, in Abingdon. We have six or seven members who will represent our club. Debbie suggested passing around a hat to collect donations. Debbie says the group will leave early so they can have lunch at a nearby restaurant before bowling. The bowlers plan to car pool it leaving from the Days Inn parking lot at 10:30 that morning.
The Industry Pancake Breakfast has been postponed to March 7, which is the same day as the Monmouth Pancake Day. Debbie said "by the time we left Industry we'd be hungry again when we reached Monmouth."
Our Pancake Day has been set for April 23 at the American Legion. Jeremy Benson will send out the sponsor letters by the end of next week and, in fact, already collected the first $75 donation from the Fraternal Order of Police. This is our biggest event of the year where we serve fresh pancakes and sausage to hundreds of people all day long. Kiwanis members will soon have tickets for sale and will be looking for pancake booster sponsors. We'll have more details over the next few weeks.

Tim announced he will be setting up a booth to sell our Kiwanis benches at future Kiwanis division meetings with proceeds to be used to offset expenses for officers to attend future conventions.
Ted Pawlias - Happy he got engaged recently.
Congratulations Ted! We might get a new member out of it!
Owen Thompson - Happy about an article written by Pat Stout in the Macomb Journal in which he mentioned the Kiwanis convention in Decatur. Another for
an Interclub today at Galesburg. Debbie, Joe, Dave Stites and
Owen attended.
Tim - Happy to thank Susan Thompson for her work on organizing the
Valentine's dinner meeting at the Ponderosa last week and for Owen filling in as
the speaker. Tim put another dollar in for the Kiwanis Mid-Winter
Conference in Decatur last weekend. He mentioned the Kiwanis
International Convention will be in Nashville this year.
Debbie Vandemark - Happy to thank Tim for providing her with a picture
of her and husband Joe playing Rolle Bolle last year. She and Joe just got back from a trip to Wyoming and had a great time.
Joe Vandemark - Happy for the great vacation.
Susan Thompson - Happy her daughter is doing well with her pregnancy.
The 50/50 Drawing was won by Tim Moss. He donated his share to
the Salvation Army.
Have you ever gotten stuck when trying to answer the question "what is Kiwanis?" Here's a quick 30 second response direct from Kiwanis International.
"Kiwanis International is an international organization of member-volunteers who give more than 6 million hours and more than $100 million each year to help change the world one child and one community at a time. Any community need can become a Kiwanis service project, especially if the need involves children, who should have the help and the right to lead healthy, successful lives. We believe that helping a child helps the world."
