Steve Hopper

Steve Hopper, (left) President/CEO, McDonough District Hospital gave club members an update on physician recruitment and his thoughts on health care reform at this weeks meeting. Steve explained how the hospital is trying to recruit more physicians and pointed to success in adding a mid-level practitioner to the emergency room at peak times and how they are evaluating proposals to establish a hospitalist program at MDH. The hospitalist will not have a regular practice, but will exclusively attend to patients in the hospital freeing up regular physicians to attend to their practices. Target date is July 1.

March programs:

March 2 - Ed Basch - Census
March 9 - John Gentry - Macomb Little League
March 16 - Pancake Day Planning
March 23 - Vandemarks New Zealand Tour
March 30 - Kiwanis Education

Macomb Kiwanis Pancake Day is Thursday, April 22, at the American Legion building, 221 West Washington. We are working on sending out letters to past and potential sponsors and will be ordering tickets soon. Our March 16 meeting will focus on Pancake Day.

Meeting Notes

President Debbie Vandemark presided and welcomed two guests. Becky Almon returned and Ted Pawlias said she is submitting a membership application. The other guest was Maureen Hazell, Principal at Edison School.

The March board meeting will follow the regular meeting next week. Note: we will not meet in our regular room next week. We will meet in the new Wesley Village Diner just down the hall from our regular room. It'll be a "blast from the past!"

Watch for a flyer in the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce March newsletter for our Chandler Park Playground project. 550 fliers will be distributed to Chamber members encouraging them to buy a brick that will be on display in a patio area near the playground. We're also working on a brochure to help with marketing and promotion of the brick sales. You can see a copy of the flyer by clicking here.

We received a letter thanking us for our memorial donation for Mary Ellen Robb. Ed Holzworth also included a $100 check to be used for our new playground project.

bowling pins Debbie, Tim, Jeff Paisley, Owen Thompson, Jay Carter, Ken Harp, John Moon and Chris Jones will represent our club at the Division 19 Spastic Paralysis Bowl-A-Thon Saturday, February 27, at Abbe Lanes in Abingdon. Over the years, our division has been successful in raising thousands of dollars for Spastic Paralysis Research. Debbie says they'll carpool it to Abingdon and will leave from the Days Inn parking lot at 11:00 that morning. It will also count as an Interclub for February.

Our March Interclub will be to Monmouth for their Pancake Day on March 6.

Happy Bucks graphic

Happy Buck$ this week from:

  • Owen Thompson - happy because he loves the snow.  Another $5 in memory of George Kelso because the Salvation Army has been receiving numerous memorial donations in his name.
  • Tim Moss - happy to have attended the Kiwanis mid-winter conference and says he "learned a lot of good things."  While there, he picked up our Distinguished Club Award for the year he was President.
  • John Moon - happy to be visiting his daughter in Naperville soon.
  • The 50/50 Drawing was won by Chris Jones. He donated his share back to the club.
