Tim Moss
Lt. Gov. Pat Stout
President Tim Moss (top right) and Lt. Gov. Pat Stout (bottom right) recapped the I-I District Mid-Winter Conference that was recently held in Decatur.

Tim, himself a former Lt. Gov., said he arrived early Saturday morning and went to a meeting of past Lt. Gov's. The Governor-elect addressed the group and announced that Brian Davis of the Chatham Kiwanis Club would be his district representative. His theme is "Start Now To Make A Difference."

They also talked about the new electronic distribution of The Illeiowan newsletter available on the I-I District website. Tim said it is saving the district a lot of money in printing and postage.

The Kiwanis International Convention will be in Nashville, Tennessee June 25-28. Tim said he would like to send someone from our club and we would help pay some of the fees and hotel accomodations.

There was a presentation on Spastic Paralysis and Tim indicated that for 2008-2009 the district budget is about $300,000 to help fight spastic paralysis. The Bowl-A-Thon goal is $50,000 to go towards that amount.

Tim says the Kiwanis International Foundation gave a report and announced that only two divisions in the I-I District are making their suggested contributions and we are one of them! Our district now gets to award five scholarships to Key Club recipients in this district.

Monmouth and Abingdon were honored as distinguished clubs in the district.

There were seminars on proposed bylaw changes, Children's Miracle Network, and Young Children Priority One.

Lt. Gov. Pat Stout said we're going to get some awards next year. Our division is now averaging $9 per member, tops in the district, in contributions to Kiwanis International Foundation.

Kiwanis One Day is a new effort to get clubs to all do a project in April. The official day is April 4.

The I-I Division is trying to get more clubs to consider donating to the Children's Miracle Network.

There's a new program for high school students called Key Leader. Pat says it will resemble the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Seminar and may eventually replace it.

A President Lincoln impersonator made an appearance at the conference the day after his 200th birthday.

Here he is with Tim.

That's Tim on the left :)

In answer to a member question, Tim said we are still working on gaining 501(c) status to help encourage donations to the club in its activities.

Pat said Macomb Kiwanis is mentioned at the school board meetings for its involvement in the Feed The Children program.

March 3 Father Ken Hummel
Costa Rica Mission Trip
March 10 Dr. George Roodhouse
Emergency Room Medicine

March 24 Peggy Jones

Meeting Notes

President Tim Moss presided. John Moon led us in singing "Keep It Booming." (We didn't "boom" too loud though since there was another meeting downstairs.) Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

Tim reminded members that the Spastic Paralysis Bowl-A-Thon has been moved to Saturday, March 14, in Abingdon. We have six or seven members who will represent our club. The bowlers plan to car pool it, leaving from the Days Inn parking lot at 10:30 that morning.

Both Industry and Monmouth will have their Pancake Days on March 7. Tim said, "with careful planning we can get to the Industry club in the morning and then travel to Monmouth for lunch!"

Pancakes Our Pancake Day has been set for April 23 at the American Legion. Jeremy Benson will send out the sponsor letters by the end of the week and then we'll follow up with members contacting businesses to secure their sponsorship.

This is our biggest event of the year where we serve fresh pancakes and sausage to hundreds of people all day long. We'll have more details over the next few weeks.

  • John Moon - Happy he got a phone call from his daughter. saying she's coming to visit him this weekend.
  • Pat Stout - Happy to tell a joke he heard at the Decatur Conference.  Johnny Carson used to do a character called "Carnac The Magnificent" who would divine the answer to a question before the question could be revealed. Just to be safe, that envelope was kept in a mayonnaise jar on Funk & Wagnall's doorstep.   In this case, the answer was "16 Candles." The question was "what do you get in every slice of John Moon's birthday cake!"  Pat announced that the oldest Kiwanis member in this area recently died at age 97. Loren Sornson was a member of the Industry Kiwanis Club.
  • Tim Moss - Happy baseball spring training is starting.

The 50/50 Drawing was won by Jack Elfrink and he donated his share back to the club.

Have you ever gotten stuck when trying to answer the question "what is Kiwanis?" Here's a quick 30 second response direct from Kiwanis International.

"Kiwanis International is an international organization of member-volunteers who give more than 6 million hours and more than $100 million each year to help change the world one child and one community at a time. Any community need can become a Kiwanis service project, especially if the need involves children, who should have the help and the right to lead healthy, successful lives. We believe that helping a child helps the world."
