March 2, 2010

Ed Basch
Ed Basch (right), Macomb Community Development Coordinator, talked about the upcoming U.S. Census and how important it is as a funding source for the city. He says a Macomb Complete Count Committee has been working for the past several months on preparing for and coming up with ideas on how to promote the census. There has been a census taken since 1790. A complete count is mandated by the U.S. Constitution every 10 years. He says "it's the only comprehensive way to know where the nation as a whole is headed and identify trends."

Census forms will be mailed out about mid-March and the return date is April 1. Ed said "people have been hired to follow up with those who do not return their forms. Each person that is counted brought in about $120 in state shared revenue last year." Besides the city, other local entities that depend on census data for funding are Macomb Public Schools, Public Library, Macomb Area Economic Development, Community Service providers and Public Housing. Ed asks everyone to complete and send back the survey and be sure to count everyone you legally can. For more information on the census, visit 2010census.gov.

Upcoming March programs:

March 9 - John Gentry - Macomb Little League
March 16 - Pancake Day Planning
March 23 - Vandemarks New Zealand Tour
March 30 - Kiwanis Education

Macomb Kiwanis Pancake Day is Thursday, April 22, at the American Legion building, 221 West Washington. We have a revised list of booster sponsors for our 61st annual event and will need members to follow up, collect checks and drop off tickets. Tickets are being printed and should be available soon. Our March 16 meeting will be devoted to planning and preparation of this big event and we will need the help of everyone for our biggest fundraiser of the year.

Meeting Notes

President Debbie Vandemark presided and we had a change of scenery as we met in the new Wesley Village diner complete with soda fountain and jukebox. It was a nice change of pace. Next week, we'll be back in our regular meeting room at Wesley Village.

Happy Birthday in March to Chuck Nicholson and a belated birthday greeting to our newest member Becky Almon who had a birthday last month.

We have a flyer and article in the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce March newsletter to promote our new playground project and brick sales. We've also received a large brick to display to potential buyers so they can get an idea of what it looks like. Debbie says more donations for the new Kiwanis Chandler Park playground are coming in. We'll have a table set up at the Prestige Communications Home and Lifestyle Show Saturday, March 20, from 9:00-5:00 and Sunday, March 21, from 11:00-4:00 to pass out information and answer questions about the new playground. Volunteers are needed that weekend to be at our table. Debbie passed around a sign up sheet for members to schedule themselves to help. You can see a copy of the flyer by clicking here.

We're going to Monmouth for their Pancake Day Saturday. That will also be our March interclub.

Debbie says the new Kiwanis International worldwide service project will be announced at the annual convention this summer. There are three finalists. One is Global Network for negleted tropical diseases; another for Malaria No More; the third choice is a UNICEF tetanus campaign.

Happy Bucks graphic

Happy Buck$ this week from:

Pat Stout - happy to put in $4 for the Kiwanis bowling team. "What a great group. We won!" Pat reported that we brought 7 bowlers to the spastic paralysis Bowl-A-Thon last Saturday in Abingdon. Ken Harp was high scorer, although he actually was recruited for the Monmouth team which needed some more participants.
Owen Thompson - happy for the bowlers and bowling cheerleaders. Owen said he also learned something about Kiwanis while there. All of this years presidents of our area clubs this year are women.
Joe Vandemark - happy for the bowling trip.
Tim Moss - happy the pancake letters have been sent out to booster sponsors.
Debbie - happy Wesley Village invited us to use their new diner. "It's a neat facility" she said. We agree.

The 50/50 Drawing was won by Pat Stout. He donated his share back to the club.
