Our Pancake Day is Thursday, April 23, at the American Legion. Jeremy Benson is in the process of sending out the booster sponsor letters and then we'll follow up with members contacting businesses to secure their sponsorship.
Official Macomb Kiwanis Club Pancake Day Countdown Clock
If you call on a potential sponsor, and they have an outside marquee, please ask them to display "Macomb Kiwanis Pancake Day - April 23 - American Legion." That will help us publicize the event. This is our biggest event of the year where we serve fresh pancakes and sausage to hundreds of people all day long. We'll have more details over the next few weeks.
Father Ken Hummel (on left) of St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Student Newman Center has been in Macomb for seven years. He talked about the center and showed pictures of some of the trips he and WIU students have taken over the years.
Father Hummel said "the Newman Center is for WIU students who wish to attend
Sunday mass and its main focus is to take care of the spiritual needs of the students."
WIU students, who belong to the Newman Center, have been to Washington, DC and several Latin American countries. One year in Mexico, they were able to help fix up houses. He says the trips are a great opportunity for students to meet people of other cultures and backgrounds.
They also visited Costa Rica where they met and tutored students and even helped paint the hallways at the school.
Father Hummel says he enjoys the chance to talk to the students about life and answer some of their questions about religion and help them discover where they "fit in."
This year during spring break he and several students are going to Kentucky to fix up houses belonging to low-income people.
March program chairman Ted Pawlias has scheduled the following speakers:
March 10
Dr. George Roodhouse Emergency Room Medicine
March 17
Tim Van Alstine WIU Sports Information
March 24
Peggy Jones Heart Problems
March 17 is St. Patrick's Day, so be sure to wear some green with your purple and gold! Should be a colorful combination!!
Ted also announced our speaker on April 7 will give us some ideas on how clubs can increase membership.
President Tim Moss presided, John Moon led us in singing "Hey Look Us Over" and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.
Tim reminded members the Spastic Paralysis Bowl-A-Thon has been moved to Saturday, March 14, in Abingdon. We have six or seven members who will represent our club. The bowlers plan to car pool it, leaving from the Days Inn parking lot at 10:30 that morning. Tim also had pledge sheets to pass around.
Both Industry and Monmouth will have their Pancake Days on March 7. Pat Stout said the "Kiwanis Pancake Express" will be running that day so we can have breakfast in Industry and lunch in Monmouth!"
Tim received a letter from Kiwanis International Foundation thanking us for our participation in the foundations Annual Club Gift Early Bird campaign by donating $5 or more per club member. We received pins to honor him as club President and one for Secretary Sue Dexter. This is the first year for the early bird awards. The letter stated "extraordinary service to the children of the world is synonymous with Kiwanis and your clubs donation will serve as a shining example to other clubs that we are all part of the larger Kiwanis family."
Happy Birthday in March to Byron Shabazz and Chuck Nicholson!
Pat Stout - Happy to salute the good old days. He said, considering
the events of last weekend at the Change of Pace, the phrase "I got bombed at
the Pace" doesn't mean what it used to.
Ted Pawlias - Happy Father Ken is here as our speaker.
Jeremy Benson - Happy for Sue Dexter who volunteered to help him stuff
the Pancake Day sponsor letters.
Tim Moss - Happy for the group here tonight and for the great
dinner.
The 50/50 Drawing was won by Pat Stout and he donated his share back
to the club.
Have you ever gotten stuck when trying to answer the question "what is Kiwanis?" Here's a quick 30 second response direct from Kiwanis International.
"Kiwanis International is an international organization of member-volunteers who give more than 6 million hours and more than $100 million each year to help change the world one child and one community at a time. Any community need can become a Kiwanis service project, especially if the need involves children, who should have the help and the right to lead healthy, successful lives. We believe that helping a child helps the world."
