Pancakes
The 60th Annual Macomb Kiwanis Club Pancake Day is Thursday, April 23, at the American Legion. Jeff Paisley turned in two more booster sponsor checks. The booster sponsor list was also distributed so members can make contacts with potential sponsors.

A booster sponsor pays $75 and receives 20 tickets along with their name on the placemat. Look and listen for Pancake Day advertising and promotion in the next couple of weeks in the newspaper and on the radio. Tim is working on setting a day and location to clean up the griddles prior to Pancake Day.

Dr. Dennis Samuelson

Dr. Dennis Samuelson (on left) from McDonough District Hospital was this weeks guest speaker. He was the Director of Labs at MDH and talked about alternative or complimentary medicines and living longer. Dr. Samuelson referred to a book called the Blue Zones a study of why some groups of people live longer than others.

He said complimentary medicine is gaining in popularity and is being used by about 60-70 million people. The alternatives are in lieu of regular medicines to help save money. "$5-6 million is spent yearly by people on herbs, supplements and over the counter medicines" he said. Some of the ones mentioned by Dr. Samuelson were Ginkgo Biloba, Horny Goat Weed, Omega 3 (fish oil), Glucosamine and Saw Palmetto. The doctor said studies have shown that, contrary to claims, these products really do not work as advertised. He said plain aspirin is probably one of the best things people can use. "If you're over the age of 50, take a baby aspirin once a day to help with heart problems" Doctor Samuelson suggested.

Next week: Jim Morel from the I-I District office will speak about Kiwanis membership.

Meeting Notes

President Tim Moss presided. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Kiwanis Pledge, John Moon led us in singing "When Kiwanis Calls " and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

We were happy to have an interclub from Carthage at this weeks meeting. Joining us were Rodney Clark, Nancy Jameson, Sylvia Kegerreis and Marilyn Walker.

Tim mentioned he had received a letter from The Alzheimer's Association regarding the Macomb Memory Walk which will be held in a few months. We have gotten a group together in the past to help raise funds for the Central Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Tim also told members about the Kiwanis International Foundation Skip-A-Meal project. It's usually held the last week of April and asks that Kiwanis members skip a meal and donate the money that would have been spent to Kiwanis. Tim said the board will bring this up and discuss further.

Tim also had a letter from Habitat For Humanity in McDonough County. They're looking for help in finding a new Executive Director. If you know anyone that might be interested, let Tim know. He has the contact information.

Debbie is trying to put something together for a Kiwanis One Day event where members participate in a community activity. She'll report back at a later meeting.

  • John Moon - Happy he'll be 93 this Friday!  Happy Birthday John.
  • Marilyn Walker from Carthage - Pleased to see Dr. Samuelson at the meeting.  She used to work with him in Hancock County.
  • Debbie Vandemark - Happy to see the interclub and for a successful Volunteer Now fundraiser.
  • Pat Stout - Thinks John Moon deserves another dollar for turning 93.
  • Joe Vandemark - Happy Birthday to John!
  • Sylvia Kegerreis of Carthage - Happy to be in Macomb.  Says "we always make her feel welcome."
  • Owen Thompson - $5 dollars in honor of the 120th anniversary of the Salvation Army in Macomb.  Owen found a news article from 1948 showing the close connection our club had with the Salvation Army even back then. He read from the article about a kite flying contest sponsored by Macomb Kiwanis.

Birthday greetings also going out to Dave Stites in April.

The 50/50 Drawing was won by Tim Moss and he donated his share back to the club.

Have you ever gotten stuck when trying to answer the question "what is Kiwanis?" Here's a quick 30 second response direct from Kiwanis International.

"Kiwanis International is an international organization of member-volunteers who give more than 6 million hours and more than $100 million each year to help change the world one child and one community at a time. Any community need can become a Kiwanis service project, especially if the need involves children, who should have the help and the right to lead healthy, successful lives. We believe that helping a child helps the world."
