A BIG THANK YOU to everyone that helped make our 60th annual Pancake Day a success! Pancake Day organizer, and club treasurer, Jeremy Benson (on right) reported we served 1,366 people and raised over $10,000 to help the children of Macomb and McDonough County in many different ways! Jeremy

St. George's Episcopal Church

Our guest speaker this week was Father Ron Drummond, Rector at St. George's Episcopal Church (on right), which is part of the Quincy Diocese.

Father Ron talked about medical missions he and others from this area have been on in Haiti and other countries. On his last trip, he said there were 50 people from this diocese as well as another one from Pennsylvania that included several physicians.

Father Ron said they go to try and help people take care of themselves. Medicine is shipped directly to Haiti and is ready for them when the volunteers arrive. He said they usually see between 350-500 patients a day with many receiving what amounts to a regular physical exam and, he says, the enthusiasm for these missions is spreading.

His job was to conduct religious services each morning and provide counseling. This is the third year he has participated and says he feels energized about connecting with human beings far away. "It's great to come together and it's a good human connection."

Tim Moss is May program chairman and says next weeks speaker will be Jeff Applegate of the Boy Scouts.

Meeting Notes

President Tim Moss presided.  Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Kiwanis Pledge, John Moon led us in singing "Onward In Kiwanis" and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

Tim made the first reading of officers and directors for the next Kiwanis year that starts October 1.

President: Debbie Vandemark
President-elect: Pat Stout
Past President: Jeremy Benson
Treasurer: Tim Moss
Board members: Rick Bulger, Ken Harp, Waneen Stout, Owen Thompson and Joe Vandemark.

Voting will take place in May.

Waneen Stout announced a new cooperative effort between the Macomb and Industry Kiwanis Clubs. It's goal is to develop a project that will have an impact on women and children in our communities, be a new activity for Kiwanis Clubs as well as an Interclub program. The idea is to implement a Young Children Priority One (ages pre-natal to 5) project that will help pregnant women, abused women or abused children in shelters. They plan to determine the needs of the women and children at each agency and how we can best help them. Waneen is also looking for club volunteers to work on planning. Debbie Vandemark and Ken Harp have already helped, Richard Carman and Stan Carman of the Industry Kiwanis have agreed to represent their club. After it's completed, a report will be submitted to I-I District First Lady Patty Heath who is encouraging clubs to take on this type of project.

Tim said there will be a Board of Directors meeting at Noon, May 5, at the Salvation Army office. Anyone is welcome, bring your own sack lunch.

Debbie showed the plaque we received for winning the Division 19 Spastic Paralysis Bowl A Thon and thanked everyone that participated. Debbie, Ken Harp, Tim, Owen and John Moon helped carry the team. Pat and Waneen Stout were our cheerleaders!

IMPORTANT MEETING REMINDER! We will hold our May 12 and May 19 meetings at Ponderosa on East Jackson Street. No meetings at St. George's Church those two weeks. Members will pay for their own meals and what the club would have billed members for meals will be donated to Kiwanis International as part of their "Skip A Meal" project.

  • Jeremy Benson - Happy to report on our successful Pancake Day last Thursday and he appreciates everyone that helped in whatever way. Special thanks to the Alpha Gamma Rho and Delta Tau Delta fraternities for being our partners in pancakes!
  • Sue Dexter - Happy to thank the non-Kiwanis members who helped out at the Pancake Day.  Several wives and others lent a hand.
  • Owen Thompson - Had one dollar for our guest speaker and another for Pat Stout's article about the Marines and fighting piracy, and another dollar for an article about the trend in churches today to take over empty stores and convert them to churches.  Owen says "the Salvation Army has been doing that for decades!  Owen also said there was a great meeting at the City Council this week to present ideas on improving the Kiwanis playground in Chandler Park. He said the proposed price is under $20,000, which is lower than a previous quote, and "it's showing great promise."
  • George Hermann - Happy we're getting ready for our 25th annual Kiwanis McDonough County Junior Olympics Saturday, May 9, at Hanson Field.  George needs several volunteers to help out that morning with timing and judging. The Kiwanis McDonough County Junior Olympics was started by George and former member Loren Dittus with homemade ribbons and has grown over the years to include students from throughout McDonough County who participate in track and field type events.
  • Debbie Vandemark - Happy for a successful Pancake Day and for everyone who helped out.  She would also like to see a good showing for Kiwanis Junior Olympics.  "It's a lot of fun out there" she said. We'll be serving hot dogs and soft drinks afterwards.
  • Joe Vandemark - Happy for wife Debbie's media appearances to promote Kiwanis projects.
  • Tim - Happy to see so much support at the Pancake Day and a special thanks to Jeremy for spearheading the project.   Another dollar to announce he sold his car and another dollar to promote the MidAmerica National Bank blood drive on June 2 from 10:00-11:00 AM.

The 50/50 Drawing was won by Tim and he donated his share back to the club.

Have you ever gotten stuck when trying to answer the question "what is Kiwanis?" Here's a quick 30 second response direct from Kiwanis International.

"Kiwanis International is an international organization of member-volunteers who give more than 6 million hours and more than $100 million each year to help change the world one child and one community at a time. Any community need can become a Kiwanis service project, especially if the need involves children, who should have the help and the right to lead healthy, successful lives. We believe that helping a child helps the world."
