Notes from President Debbie Vandemark:
If anyone would like to show your Kiwanis spirit, you are invited to attend the Kiwanis presentation of the Hugh O’Brian Leadership Academy (HOBY) Award. Each year the high school selects one outstanding student to attend, and Kiwanis makes it happen by paying for the registration to send the student. The presentation will take place in the Macomb High School Auditorium during Honors Night, next Wednesday night, May 12, at 7:00. The recipient, Lexa Mahr, will be invited to be a future program to share her experience with Kiwanis.
As a thank you to the fraternities who helped with Pancake Day, pizza will be delivered to the chapter houses next week on a date selected by each fraternity. Thank you letters are also going out to others who helped.
It was called to our attention by Owen Thompson that maintenance needs to done at the Kiwanis shed behind the Elks Lodge. A maintenance day will be announced.
Upcoming dates:
* Kiwanis/McDonough County Junior Olympics will be this Saturday, May 8, at Hanson Field. Set up is at noon for a 1:00 start and we hope to finish by 4:00. Debbie says we will have bottled water, courtesy of Hy Vee and snacks, thanks to the Salvation Army, for the participants. The new afternoon time was selected to avoid conflicts with Little League and Soccer games and we've already received confirmation from several local and area schools. The WIU Athletic Department will supply stopwatches and Dave Miller will bring the starting gun. Members are needed for sign-in, timing events and overall coordination. We still need more Kiwanis volunteers to help out.
* June 12 - the Galesburg Kiwanis Club will host a golf tournament. 12:30 shotgun start followed by dinner. Cost is $45 per person.
* June 14 - the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development will be having their golf outing and we've been invited to participate and sponsor a hole.
* June 22 - the Chicago White Sox is teaming up again with the I-I District for the 5th annual "Kiwanis Grand Slam" for a game against the Atlanta Braves. All Kiwanis members and their families get a special deal on tickets.
Debbie reports we collected several Happy Buck$ from members.
Wayne Mounts won the 50/50 Drawing and donated his share back to the club.
Thanks again to Debbie for taking the notes for this weeks Builder.
