Debbie Vandemark

Debbie Vandemark (right) gave us a presentation on a Salvation Army sponsored trip she took to Israel in February with her husband Joe along with Owen and Susan Thompson. She said there were 51 officers and others associated with the Salvation Army from the U.S and other countries that attended.

Debbie told us they spent time at Tiberias, crossed the Jordan River and visited the Dead Sea, Jerusalem and Bethlehem. They flew in and out of Tel Aviv. The group visited Jaffa south of Tel Aviv which King David and his son King Solomon conquered for its port, the Roman Theatre, saw remnants of Kng Herrod's Palace and many excavation efforts.

Here's Joe and Debbie dining on "shekel" fish while in Israel. Legend says whoever is served the fish that has a coin in its mouth must "pay the taxes." A shekel is the name for a Roman coin. Looks like Joe got the one with the coin.

Next Week:

June 23 - Dr. Loran Erdmann - Childhood obesity
June 30 - Dr. Shana Porteen - Sociology and children

Tim is the July program chairman and one of the highlights will be a visit from his niece who is a Civil War re-enactor. Tim says she also rides horses, therefore is in the calvary. "If we are lucky, she may even treat us to a Civil War tune on her fiddle" Tim said.

Meeting Notes

President Tim Moss presided. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Kiwanis Pledge, John Moon led us in singing "The Kiwanis Comrade Song" and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

The Macomb School Board recognized our club for its support in administering the School Snack Program. Tim and Gary Sash attended the school board meeting where they received a "coveted coaster" from the school district. Hassan Espahbodi does a great job in overseeing the program and wants to thank everyone involved in its success including:

Noon Rotary
Altrusa
Lions
Welsey Methodist Church
Citizens National Bank
Walmart
MidAmerica National Bank
First Bankers Trust

Tim announced that the Macomb Heritage Days committee is looking for people to assist with the parade on Saturday, June 27. We have volunteered in the past to help people find where they are supposed to line up and help prevent children from running into the street to collect candy. Tim will bring in a sign-up sheet next week.

Membership Committee Chairman Ken Harp said the Yellow Team has 24 points and the Blue Team 8 points in our current Membership Drive. Time is running out and we need to continue inviting prospective members to be our guest and encourage former members to return. So far we have two new members as a result of the drive.

Tim says our Kiwanis division is having a special night at a Chicago White Sox game.

Tim read a thank you letter from our HOBY winner. Here's what she had to say:

Hello Kiwanis Club-

My name is Alissa DeRoos. This year you sponsored me to go to HOBY, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Camp. I cannot express how grateful I am for you. For without your club, I wouldn't have had this life changing experience. I don't know in what way I can express my gratitude, but if you are at all interested, I would love to come to talk with you and let your members know that they have had an impact on changing a life and making someone's future much brighter. If this is not something you'd be interested in, I completely understand, I just wanted to write to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,

Alissa DeRoos

Happy Bucks logo Happy Buck$

  • John Moon - Happy he's going to Naperville to see his daughter for Father's Day
  • Joe Vandemark - One Happy Buck for the bench builders.  Joe reported they completed four benches Saturday afternoon.  He had another one for being able to work with Don Mathis who "really knows his business."
  • Pat Stout - Happy for the Kiwanis Leadership Conference last weekend.
  • Jay Carter - Happy to be back after being gone for a month.  He told us that Brian Elliott, the boy we sponsored for Boys State, was number one in the state and made governor of Boys State. Macomb Kiwanis donates money to sponsor a boy.
  • Debbie Vandemark - Happy for the Flags of Love on display for Flag Day and for a good turnout of volunteers who helped raise them in the morning and lower them in the evening.
  • Tim - Happy for the Kiwanis Leadership Training last weekend.  He and Debbie attended along with Pat and Waneen Stout.  Everybody made it back OK even after Tim had car problems.

The 50/50 Drawing was won by Tim.  He donated his share to the Salvation Army.

Have you ever gotten stuck when trying to answer the question "what is Kiwanis?" Here's a quick 30 second response direct from Kiwanis International.

"Kiwanis International is an international organization of member-volunteers who give more than 6 million hours and more than $100 million each year to help change the world one child and one community at a time. Any community need can become a Kiwanis service project, especially if the need involves children, who should have the help and the right to lead healthy, successful lives. We believe that helping a child helps the world."
