Dr. Shana Porteen

Dr. Shana Porteen (left) is an Instructor of Sociology at Western Illinois University and spoke to us this week about Sociology and Children. She talked about helping children and how we can identify the different needs of children in our society.

Dr. Porteen asked members to identify different ways that children learn to socialize. We identified play, school and church as three areas.

Children learn social skills by playing with other children, schools help children learn about their identities and interact with other people. Media is another big influence on children. She says, there's an increase of violence in the media and more violent games being produced and played." Dr. Porteen suggested there was a strong link between violence in media and how children react. "It definitely has an influence on childrens behavior" she said.

Following her program, she encouraged members to ask questions and exchange ideas and thoughts about ways children learn social skills and the resulting conversation was one of the liveliest discussions we've had in a long time with many different thoughts and suggestions being shared.

Thanks to June program chairman Dr. Gary Sash for a variety of informative and educational speakers this month.

Tim Moss is July program chairman and has lined up the following:

July 7 - Induction of new members with guest speaker, Past I-I District Governor Amron Buchanan. Tim says we may have as many as four new members to induct!
July 14 - Treasurer Jeremy Benson on club finances.
July 21 - A Civil War reenactor.
July 28 - Paula Pepmeyer from Ponderosa will hold a Q and A session about the possible move to Ponderosa for weekly club meetings.

Meeting Notes

President Tim Moss presided. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Kiwanis Pledge, John Moon led us in singing "KEEP IT BOOMING " and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

Tim, Herb Butler and Rick Bulger all helped out with the Heritage Days parade Saturday morning by guiding parade entries to their proper locations and watching to make sure kids didn't get hurt running after candy.

  • Tim - Happy his dentist appointment is over.
  • Pat Stout - Happy to give a recap of the International Convention he attended with his wife Waneen along with Joe and Debbie Vandemark.   Pat reported that as of right now, there are 250,000 Kiwanis members around the world.  The goal is a million members by 2015.  Pat announced that Kiwanis International is also looking for a new worldwide service project following the success of the Iodine Deficiency program.  He also said there were a lot of great workshops that both he and Waneen attended.

The 50/50 Drawing was won by Mary Haney.  The first time winner donated her share back to the club.
