Amron and Claudia Buchanan

Amron Buchanan (pictured with his wife Claudia), 2005-2006 Illinois-Eastern Iowa District President, presided over the induction of two new members and gave us a "pep" talk about Kiwanis and the benefits of being an active Kiwanis member.

Buchanan explained that the Macomb Kiwanis Club is part of Kiwanis International, an organization with members all over the world. The Macomb club is in Division 19 of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis International. The districts major project is to support spastic paralysis research and the Macomb club has been a leader over the years in raising money for the project.

He said being a part of Kiwanis enables us to "to do more for our community, together as members, than we could do by ourselves."

Pat Stout with Mary and Ed Haney
Ed and Mary Haney (above with sponsor Pat Stout) were inducted into the club and Amron asked Pat to introduce them. Pat said "they are our neighbors and are very active in the community." Pat said he was happy they decided to become members of our club and so are we.

Then, Buchanan presented a pin to Pat for sponsoring them and explained the pin was a "key" that is given to members who bring in new members. The key entitles the wearer to special privileges at the international convention, including preferred seating. He encouraged everyone to continue to bring in new members to help the club grow and prosper.

Claudia talked about Kiwanis involvement with the Pasadena Rose Parade December 29-January 3 with tour host Paul Palazzolo, the new Kiwanis International president. It includes airfare, meals and the opportunity to see Rose Parade floats being assembled. There's more information on the Kiwanis International website.

Amron encouraged us to keep mentioning Kiwanis in conversations and promote the club whenever possible saying "there's a lot of kids out there who need help. Those kids can't wait, we've got to do it right now."

Pat also wins the coveted Kiwanis t-shirt for bringing in the new members.

Upcoming programs:

July 14 - Treasurer Jeremy Benson on club finances.
July 21 - A Civil War reenactor.
July 28 - Paula Pepmeyer from Ponderosa will hold a Q and A session about the possible move to Ponderosa for weekly club meetings. She can hopefully answer some of your questions about the restaurant and what they can offer us.

Meeting Notes

President Tim Moss presided. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Kiwanis Pledge, John Moon led us in singing "When Kiwanis Calls " and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

The I-I District Convention is in August and Tim said we will have a space to display the Kiwanis benches we've built and hopefully get orders from other clubs who want to buy some. We do need some help to have people at the display space and show the benches to other clubs. Let Tim know if you can go and help sell the benches.

There will be Div. 17 golf outing, August 5 at Aledo. Cost is $65 per golfer with dinner included. Tim would like to go and hopes to get three others to join him to make a foursome.

The Kiwanis International Iodine Deficiency Project was a big success and now KI is looking for a new major project. Tim has received suggestions from Hassan Espabodi and Jerry Carlson and would like to get a group together to discuss the proposals before we present them to Kiwanis International.

Tim reminded us about the Kiwanis division special night at a Chicago White Sox game.

  • Pat Stout - Happy to report that Div. 19 is the leader in the district for number of new members.  He had another buck to localize a story he heard at the international convention.  Pat says "everybody knows John Moon. Not only is John known in Macomb, he's known across the country and around the world."  Pat said he was once assigned to write a story about Burt Reynolds who was filming a movie in southern Illinois. When he told John about it, John asked Pat to say hi to Burt for him. When he did, Burt told Pat "Hey, John's a great guy. How's he doing?" On another occasion, Pat was assigned to write a story about President Obama who was visiting Chicago. John asked Pat to say hi to the president for him. Pat did and the president said "you know, John Moon is a great guy." Later, it was announced that the Pope would visit the mid-west and John asked Pat if he could go with him to say hi to the pope. Pat agreed and when they arrived, John disappeared before the ceremony to visit with the pope while Pat waited outside. A crowd began to gather and Pat couldn't believe his eyes when he looked over and saw John with the pope as part of his entourage. A guy next to Pat turned to him and asked "hey, who's the guy in the pointy hat standing next to John Moon?"
  • John Moon - Happy to know a guy (meaning Pat) who can make up such funny stories.
  • Claudia Buchanan - Happy to be with us tonight.
  • Amron Buchanan - Happy to be here.
  • Owen Thompson - Happy Sue provided MDH notepads and pens at a summer camp.
  • Jay Carter - Happy to report that Elizabeth Walcott had her flagpole replaced as part of an impromptu Kiwanis project  She sent us a thank you letter and made a $30 donation to help pay for the flag.
  • Jeff Paisley - Happy to be back after his daughters softball season, where "she did very well."
  • Tim - Happy for his sons birthday today and for Amron and Claudia being at this weeks meeting.
Our condolences go out to the Alan Walker family. Alan lived in Macomb and was a member of the Industry Kiwanis Club before he recently passed away.

The 50/50 Drawing was won by Tim (again!). He donated his share to the Salvation Army.
