Debbie Vandemark

2008-2009 President-elect Debbie Vandemark presided and reminded members of the Macomb Alzheimer's Memory Walk September 20. She says it's not too late for us to get a group together. Debbie has the forms and had a Memory Walk t-shirt to auction off for Alzheimer's research. Owen was the winner with a $15 bid. George Hermann and Herb Butler said they would represent our club if someone else would like to join them. It takes three to be a team. We'll announce it again at next weeks meeting. George said he already has $20 pledged to him!

Debbie read Thank You letters from Laura and Daniel Devaurux for our support of children to be able to attend summer music camps. "It was really a great experience" they said.

We received a letter from Eagleview Health Systems for their dental center, one of which is located in Macomb. The building is complete and they are considering some kind of art work to list contributors to display. Since we were one of the contributors, they would like permission to list our club. Debbie will bring it up at the next board meeting for official approval.

Debbie passed around the 2008-2009 Program Chairman list for each month. There are still months available, so please take a month and arrange programs. It helps contribute to better meetings.

We're updating our membership directory. Please check it for your correct address, phone number and email address.

Debbie had booklets from the Performing Arts Society for the upcoming season to pass around. If we need more, we can get them.

Debbie asked members for help in putting together a September Interclub. Owen has proposed we make a trip over to Bloomington and see long-time member Walker Robb. (Walker: if you're reading this, please act surprised anyway!) Debbie will work on that and get more details for us.

A meeting at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss the Kiwanis playground in Chandler Park was held last week. Owen reported there was a proposal to replace the swing set and slide located on the northeast part of the park. Owen researched possible replacements and presented them to the committee. They discussed several color schemes ranging from red, white and blue to a more neutral color. Owen and Jeremy will get together to come up with a decision to take back to the city. Owen said we are still receiving lots of compliments on the repainting of the existing equipment that was accomplished with the help of the Morning Rotary Club.

Ken Harp asked for a report on the recent Quad Cities Mega Interclub and Debbie said the program speaker was very educational. She says she thought it went very well. Money left over from the registration fees was donated to spastic paralysis.

Meeting Notes

John Moon led us in singing "Hail To Kiwanis"
Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.
Sue Dexter won the 50/50 Drawing and donated her share to the Salvation Army.

  • John Moon put one in after reading an article in the Macomb Journal about a Dallas, Texas man in his wheelchair who, carrying a knife and baseball bat, rode his wheelchair into a store. He proceeded to beat the cash register with the bat but didn't take any money. Instead, he took a bunch of condoms and an energy drink!
  • George Hermann - $2 - he attended the Community Quality of Life Committee awards ceremony where several people were honored, including doctors and medical organizations. He and several others were recognized for their work with the Illinois Senior Olympics. George served as director for many years and received an award for his service.
  • Herb Butler - his wife got a clean bill of health.
  • Debbie - for George and his award.
  • Owen Thompson - actually two "penalty" bucks. His wife Susan forgot she was program chairman and had to be out of town and another for not having a speaker at this weeks meeting.
