Dr. Gary Sash (pictured) with Family Chiropatric and Occupational Health Service discussed coping strategies and relaxation techniques at this weeks meeting.
He asked "what do you think it takes to be healthy?" Eating right, exercise and good relationships were among the answers. Good types of exercise are aerobics, resistance (where you push against something), stretching, yoga and balance exercises.
Balance includes trying to stand on one foot for five seconds, which Susan Thompson and Pat Stout tried. Then try it with your eyes closed. The best thing to increase your balance may be to do slow moving exercises that reminded Susan of choreographed moves. He said having good relationships is important, as well as genes and good sleep. You also need the ability to handle crisis situations.
Dr. Sash says you can use these strategies to cope with stress: behavior modification, journal writing, art therapy and humor therapy, creative problem solving, time management, information seeking, hobbies, forgiveness, dream therapy (analizing your dreams), prayer and faith.
Relaxation techniques include meditation, yoga, music and massage therapy, muscle relaxation, physical exercise and nutrition. John Moon asked a question about yoga and the Dr. had him demonstrate one of the procedures which John did very well.
He also said chiropractic is a good stress and relaxation tool. A chiropractor first examines a patient to find out about nerve interference and then bone and joint problems. The main tool they use is manipulation or adjusting which is done either by hand or an instrument. He also uses acupuncture for diagnosis, but does not treat with needles. Dr. Sash demonstrated some of the tools he uses, one of which helped treat a four week old child who was crying a lot. After his treatment, the child slept through the night, much to his mothers delight.
Dr. Sash grew up in Macomb and practiced in Princeton and Carbondale before coming back here. His dad is Dick Miller who was a president of our club in the 1970's when one of his projects was the Chandler Park Kiwanis playground that was recently repainted by our club with help from the Morning Rotary Club. Ted Pawlias encouraged Gary to become a member and continue his father's legacy.
Thanks to Susan Thompson for introducing Dr. Gary Sash to us this week. Next week Joyce Fox will play the piano and sing.
Tim Moss is October program chairman and says that October 7 our guest speaker will be historian and author John Hallwas. Speaking later in the month will be Sue Melton of The Diamond Den and Tim says she will have a special gift for one lucky club member!
President Jeremy Benson presided.
John Moon led us in singing "When Kiwanis Calls"
Owen Thompson gave the invocation.
Ted Pawlias brought along two trophies. He, Hassan Espahbodi and Joe Vandemark were winners at the Hancock County Gun Club with one trophy for the 2008 First Summer Trap League and the other for the 2008 Second Summer Trap League!
Jeremy - for the Chicago Cubs NL Central Division
champions. He even played the Go
Cubs Go song
Tim - for the Cubs and another for the Bears and another for the
program sign-up sheet. And one more (a sad one) his 11 year old
dog has cancer. One final one for something he probably forgot to
say.
Joe Vandemark - saw Terry Gaul (said "Go Cubs!) recently and
another for a convention in Portland where he had a good time. He said his wife Debbie was able to tear herself away from Macomb and they enjoyed the trip to the northwestern part of the country.
Pat - for our Memory Walk team and the interclub with Owen and Susan Thompson, Debbie Vandemark, Dave Stites and that went to
Bloomington where Walker Robb presented the program with his son as the
guest speaker. The Kiwanis team raised over $230 for Alzheimer's
Association at the Macomb Memory Walk. Thanks to George Hermann, Tim Moss, Pat and Herb Butler for representing our club. Herb didn't walk, he
ran! Jeremy said it was a successful walk.
Owen had some fliers from the Bloomington club for the 2008 Nut
Sale they are having. He has the forms if you want to order
something. They have everything from almonds to cashews, peanuts,
pecans and walnuts. It supports the Bloomington Golden K Club
and might even give you an idea for some Christmas gifts.
Tim Moss won the 50/50 Drawing and donated his share back to the club in the form of Happy Bucks.
