If diamonds are indeed "a girl's best friend" Sue Melton knows why. Sue is the owner of The Diamond Den and has been in business for 51 years in downtown Macomb.
She said "women like diamonds" and told the men in the audience not to forget women on important days like their birthday, Mother's Day, wedding anniversaries and Christmas.
Sue says she likes "making people happy."
Diamonds are "the world's rarest commodity and are beautiful things" she said. They form 250 miles under the earth, starting out as pure carbon similar to pencil lead. It takes years to crystalize into a diamond.
Volcano's thrust the diamonds up to the surface of the earth so they can be mined. The first mines were in India in the 1600's and were discovered in South Africa in the 1860's. The newest diamond mines are in the northwest territories of Canada with "Polar Bear" as one of their brand names.
Sue has been on diamond buying trips to Antwerp many times over the years. She described going underground into the tunnels and said "if you're claustrophobic, you wouldn't like it." Sticks of dynamite are inserted and exploded to expose big chunks of rocks that, over time, can be turned into diamonds. There's safety signs located throughout the mines and they have a pretty good safety record. She says the workers are paid well and provided housing. Diamond cutting is one of the final steps and is usually learned handed down from fathers to their children.
Diamonds are "rare, beautiful and expensive" she said. "They never wear out, it's always brand new. Diamonds never lose their value, in fact they increase in value" according to Sue.
Next week November program chairman Debbie Vandemark will have a speaker talking about a Youth Assistance Program.
President Tim Moss presided.
John Moon led us in singing "Keep It Booming"
Owen Thompson gave the invocation
Tim reminded members again about updating our club bylaws and he hopes to vote on the changes in a few weeks.
One additional possible change would be to establish an Executive Committee that would have the authority to fill-in for the Board of Directors and make decisions about club activities and funding requests.
We will be back at Hy Vee and Wal Mart Friday and Saturday, October 31-November 1, for the final weekend of our annual Peanut Days.
Tim says a few boxes remain and once they're gone, they're gone!
There will be a board meeting Thursday, November 6, at Tim's house at 6:00. Board members, or any member, that can attend are asked to let Tim know so he and Alice can have enough soup and bread for everyone.
President Tim Moss holds up a giant $2,000 check from Wal Mart to help support the Feed The Children program in Macomb. Hassan Espahbodi brought the check in and announced that, in addition to the $2,000 from Wal Mart, other donations are also coming in from local businesses and service clubs in addition to what we contribute as a club. Their budget is $12,000 and the list of applicants is growing. $10,250 has been pledged as of tonight. Feed The Children was started a few years ago to provide healthy snacks for children who might not have such things available at hom after school and on the weekends.
Dues statements will be distributed next week.
Tim - had $2 which he owed from last week.
Joe Vandemark - decided he was going to do something good and help buy a car for a friend who needed one. A car was selected and taken to a mechanic who said "run, don't walk away, you don't want it." Fortunately, Joe was able to come up with another vehicle that was, as he described it, "absolutely beautiful."
Hassan - happy the Feed The Children program is off to a good start.
Pat Stout - both happy and sad. It's the time of the year when he
remembers Dr. Ken Pawlias who was very dedicated to Peanut Days.
He was there every year and helped the club out many times.
Rick Bulger - happy to get good news back from recent medical
tests and to be able to drive again. Another dollar for John Moon who drove Rick back and forth to Kiwanis meetings the past six months.
The 50/50 Drawing was won by new member Waneen Stout. She donated her share back to the club.
