Tim Moss

Secretary/Tresurer Tim Moss gave members an update on the financial status of the club and how our finances work.

He described the clubs General Fund and Community Fund.

The General Fund is basically the administrative account for Kiwanis.

The Community Fund is used for paying for childrens projects and activities.

Under the General Fund is a separate Bench Fund and that is where we would deposit and spend money raised by the sale of Kiwanis benches. This money has been earmarked to help pay for members expenses to attend different Kiwanis conventions.

The Community Fund has separate categories including a Moline Foundation Account so we have 501(c)(3) status. That makes it possible for contributions to our club to be tax deductable. We use money from the Community Fund and Moline Foundation "Community" Account to pay for donations to a wide variety of Kiwanis projects including the school sack lunch program and the playground equipment project. Money raised from Pancake Day and Peanut Day goes into the Community Fund.

Then Tim reviewed the General Fund and explained in detail what is actually received and spent for meals and club administration.

We also discussed whether we should go ahead and allocate donations to different causes automatically or wait until we actually receive a request from that agency. That will be discussed at a future board meeting for clarification. Next week, Debbie will conduct an educational session about Kiwanis and the Macomb Kiwanis Club which should be helpful to our newer members and a good refresher for long-time members.

November 17 - We will not meet at Wesley Village. Instead, we will meet at Cafe Aroma, 301 W University Dr. (Click here for a map) Vicky Torreson, Vice President of the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce, will be the guest speaker.

We will also meet at Cafe Aroma December 1. November 17 and December 1 were the only days that Wesley Village was not available for us to hold meetings.

Meeting Notes

President Debbie Vandemark presided. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Kiwanis Pledge, John Moon led us in singing "On Kiwanis" and Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.

There's a few cases of peanuts left so we'll be back at Hy Vee Friday and Saturday to wrap up this years Kiwanis Peanut Days.

Debbie said the Galesburg Kiwanis Club is having their pancake day Friday, November 13, at the Lutheran Church there. She says that would be a good time to have an Interclub and proceeded to sign up Owen Thompson and Tim Moss. One more member is needed to make it an official Interclub.

Mike Pritchard said he had been in contact with the school about Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 5. We serve pancakes and sausage for this PTO event.

Debbie passed around the program chair sign up sheets for the next year. Members volunteer to arrange for speakers and programs for a month at a time. Ken Harp suggested that program chairs talk to the preceding months chair to see if they had somebody who was unable to make it that month. Jerry Carlson thought that members think about their own interests and hobbies which might make for a good program.

We had an Interclub to Carthage last week. Debbie and Joe Vandemark, John Moon and Wayne Mounts went and she said they had a great time carving pumpkins for a local nursing home.

Flag waving Jay Carter reminded everyone that the Flags of Love will go up in Chandler Park Wednesday, November 11, for Veterans Day. Flags are raised at 7AM and taken down at 4PM. He invited everyone to go to the VFW at 10;30 to listen to John Moon give a talk and then at 11:00 there will be a 21 gun salute at VFW. Then there's another ceremony at the American Legion. This Saturday the Veterans Memorial will be unveiled in Bushnell. Mike Pritchard said there will be a free breakfast for all veterans at Hy Vee on Veterans Day.

Putting dollars into the Happy Buck-et were:

  • Owen Thompson - happy for John Moon.  He said he was picking up food at Edison School when the principal said she enjoyed the opportunity to meet John last week. He's also happy to see Mike Pritchard back with us again.
  • Debbie Vandemark - happy to see those members we don't see too often.
  • Joe Vandemark -  happy to see Dr. Gary Sash back with us this week.
