November program chairman Debbie Vandemark introduced Joy Boruff (on right), Executive Director of the Moline Foundation serving several counties around the Quad Cities. It was started in 1953 and has donated grants to numerous groups and organizations through the years. They also help non-profit organizations, such as Kiwanis, make it possible for people to donate to that club and the foundation, in turn, donates back to a project to make that donation tax deductable. The foundation likes to serve as the administrative arm of a club and maintains close contact with clubs about what they are doing with the donations. Joy said "the members we work with really appreciate their assistance."
Next Week: Guest speakers will be Melissa Aguirre, Lincoln School 2nd Grade Teacher & Paula Blythe, Lincoln School Librarian.
November 25: Susan Thompson will talk about how the Angel Tree Program benefits the children of families who receive the Christmas Food Baskets that Kiwanis has long helped with, and how both come together in one very busy Salvation Army Distribution Day.
President Tim Moss presided.
John Moon led in singing "On Kiwanis"
Chuck Nicholson gave the invocation.
Tim reminded members again about updating our club bylaws and he hopes to vote on the changes in the next couple of weeks.
One additional possible change would be to establish an Executive Committee that would have the authority to fill-in for the Board of Directors and make decisions about club activities and funding requests.
Tim announced the Kiwanis Governor's visit will be Saturday, December 13. Click here for more details. Be sure to let Tim know if you would like to attend. Debbie would like to get an Interclub together for that. Another signup sheet will be passed around again next week.
Several sign up sheets were passed around this week. "Breakfast with Santa" is Saturday, December 6, at MHS Commons in conjunction with the Lincoln School PTO. We set up, cook pancakes and sausage and then clean up. It's to help the Lincoln PTO raise funds for their organization. Set up will be Friday night and then we show up Saturday morning to cook and serve. Serving starts after 7:00 and runs until about 10:00.
Debbie announced that Salvation Army bell ringing for our club will be at Farm King and Hy Vee (both inside locations). She asks that you "please try to sign up for as many hours as you can." We see lots of people, and they see us helping out the Salvation Army.
The Picture Book of the Month reading program is starting up again at Lincoln School. We go to the school and read to the second grade students. Then we donate the books to their school library. We'll hear more about that at next weeks meeting.
Tim held a board meeting at his house last week and said they got a lot of work done including approving a $300 donation to Project Santa coordinated by the Western Illinois Regional Council and a $500 donation to the McDonough
County Youth Asisstance Program. $700 was approved to be given to the Kiwanis International Foundation. This is the annual gift we've done for many
years. Click here to see the Community Fund budget or here to see the General Fund budget.
Next week, we're having an Interclub to Monmouth. It's a noon meeting with a
buffet lunch at the Monmouth Country Club. Debbie says we should
leave around 11:00 from the Day's Inn parking lot to get there about 11:30. The meeting starts at 12:15 and will be over by 1:00. Cost is $8.
Jeremy Benson reported over $2,000 has been brought in so far from our annual Peanut Days. We have a few boxes remaining and will wrap it up with one final, hopefully, Peanut Day at Hy-Vee Friday, November 14, from 10-6. Jeremy said "expenses were around $900 and the goal was $2,000. However, the ultimate goal is to go past $3,000!
Tim - happy he had the day off for Veterans Day so came dressed casual tonight.
Jeremy Benson - had a couple bucks as he was off today and able to spend time with the kids who were also off due to Veterans Day.
Debbie Vandemark - she is certain all of those sign up sheets will come
back to her completely filled out.
Joe Vandemark - six days and counting before retirement.
The 50/50 Drawing was won by Gary Sash and he donated his share back
to the club.
